Must-See Venice

excellent guide for first-timers or returning visitors
I bought this book on impulse and I'm so glad I did. I was not familiar with this series of eating guides to popular destinations but will buy others in the future. Includes practical info on restaurants, cafes, etc of all prices, plus descriptions and mini-reviews. Even advises whether or not reservations are necessary. The book itself is small and lightweight so easy to carry. Organized by neighborhood. Also includes info on bars, shopping, even places in Venice to picnic and the location of some public w.c.'s.

Mutacion

Author: Robin Cook
Average review score:

Nathalie Dupree Cooks for Family and Friends
I have this wonderful cookbook, and refer to it more than all the others in my collection. The recipes are made with ingredients that one can easily find in the supermarket; or locally at the seasonal, outdoor vegetable market. Simple, delicious, satisfying...Nathalie Dupree radiates with southern charm and hospitality, and it comes through in her writing. If you have ever had the opportunity to watch her cooking show, you would not have any doubts, that this book is a must have! It makes a perfect accompanying gift for bridal showers, as well.

Natural Writer: A Story About Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (Creative Minds Biography)
Published in Unknown Binding by Carolrhoda Books (E) (May, 2001)
Authors: Judy Cook, Laura Lee Smith, and Laurie Harden
Average review score:

Inspiring Reading for Creative Youngsters
Creative youngsters of a somewhat higher age-range than the one recommended, about 8-15 years really, will find themselves inspired by the account of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' early struggle to find her forte as a writer, in this latest of the Creative Minds Biography series. Sprinkled with finely detailed, full-page charcoal drawings, it also draws an engaging parallel between the young Marjorie's life on a family farm and Jody Baxter's in "The Yearling." Marjorie's father Arthur Kinnan nurtured her love of nature just as Penny Baxter did for Jody, which gives us a fascinating insight into the true-life sources for Kinnan Rawlings' famous creations. The highs and lows of her life and career in rural Florida are then undramatically yet sensitively described: the book's tone is quiet and true, as clear and sweet as a brook in Rawlings' fiction.

New Complete Guide to Environmental Careers
Published in Paperback by Island Press (March, 1993)
Authors: John R. Cook, Kevin Doyle, Bill Sharp, and Environmental Careers Organization
Average review score:

Good overview of environmental careers, I recommend it!
As Director of Environmental Studies I regularly recommend this book to students who come to see me about environment-related career possibilities.

The book is divided into 4 parts:

1) Job hunting in the environmental field. In this section readers are given hints about education, using volunteer and internship opportunities, and ways to break into the environmental job market.

2) Planners and communicators. In this section readers are provided info about jobs related to these two areas, including environmental education.

3) Environmental protection. In this section information about industries such as solid waste management, hazardous waste mgt, air quality mgt, and water quality mgt are outlined. There are opportunties in both private and public sectors for people trained in these areas.

4) Natural resource management. This section describes the kinds of jobs most people tend to think of for someone trained in the environmental sciences: land and water conservation; fisheries; wildlife mgt; park maintenance and mgt; outdoor recreation; and forestry.

All in all, this book provides a nice introduction to environmental careers. I know that students of mine have used this book to look for job directions, and to show their parents that choosing a major in environmental studies can lead to a wide range of viable career options.

Probably the best overview book on the market.

5 stars.

The New Library Key
Published in Paperback by H.W. Wilson (February, 1976)
Author: Margaret Gerry Cook
Average review score:

BEST SUMMARY OF LIBRARY INFORMATION FOR PATRONS
Cook's book, unfortunately dated, attempts to show what is available in libraries for serious, i.e. college and up, users of libraries. It explains what reference books are available and how to use them.

Written before the dawn of the Internet it misses that prime source of information. It is a good reminder that information is not confined to an electronic source.

New York Central's Mercury
Ordering a book via internet is always kind of an adventure, you'll never know what you get. But, in this case I was really impressed. The book presents the train, the development of the engine and its coaches up to the bone china which was used with illustrations of good quality and size (even some rare color shots). It was great fun to read and browse.

The book to turn to when looking for a North American recipe
I bought this book on a remainder table in 1980 and have used it ever since. It is one of the best reference cookbooks I have ever owned. Finally!!!
After six years of waiting to own this book, my dream will come true. Old copies from the previous printings have proved impossible to find. They must be scarce because Njal's Saga is a true classic. A must for any collection.

Whether your interesting in Vikings comes from watching the old movie with Tony Curtis and Kurt Douglass ("Who sails with me to avenge the death of Ragnar?") or is more serious (You have read ALL the other Sagas available), you'll enjoy Njall's Saga.

It's will hold your interest for a long time!
